Car insurance is basically an agreement between you and your provider. You pay a regular premium fee, and in exchange, they help cover the costs if your car gets damaged in an accident or by other covered events, or is stolen.
Car insurance for drivers in Georgetown works just like car insurance throughout Canada, but it's tailored uniquely to your specific needs in Georgetown, Ontario. It takes into account local data, like crime rates and collisions, to ensure you have the right coverage for your needs.
For example, between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30, 2023, the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) data showed there had been 31 vehicle thefts in Georgetown alone. Those thefts were part of a larger trend, with a total of 345 cars stolen across the Halton Region in just one month. This means that, depending on your vehicle type, your BrokerLink broker may suggest you add comprehensive coverage to your policy.
All Georgetown drivers need to be aware that car insurance is not optional in Ontario or in Canada; it’s required. In other words, you cannot drive in Georgetown, Ontario, without a valid car insurance policy. You'll face risks like steep fines, licence suspensions, and vehicle impoundment.
Plus, if you get into an accident and don’t have car insurance, you will be on the hook for paying for damages and injuries not only to your vehicle but the other person and their vehicle as well. This can add up to thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars.
If your policy recently expired and you need help renewing it, contact a BrokerLink insurance advisor who can help you with the expired car insurance renewal process.
Georgetown insurance brokers are here to help you find the right coverage that fits your needs. There are plenty of auto insurance options out there, and in Ontario, some are required by law while others are optional. Let’s break them down so you can choose the best coverage for you.
Third party liability coverage
Accident benefits coverage
Uninsured automobile coverage
Direct compensation-property damage (DCPD) coverage
Collision coverage
Comprehensive coverage
Accident forgiveness coverage
Waiver of depreciation
Loss of use coverage
This is the type of coverage that comes into play if you cause property damage or bodily harm to another person via a collision. Georgetown drivers must have $200,000 in liability insurance, though many choose to purchase more than this. Liability coverage can pay for a wide range of collision-related expenses, like medical fees, repair bills, and legal fees.
Accident benefits coverage can be claimed if someone is injured in an accident in which you were involved. No matter the injury, if medical expenses are not covered by health insurance, you can file an accident benefits claim to cover the rest. Examples of fees that accident benefits may cover include physical therapy, prescription medication, lost income, and funeral fees.
Uninsured automobile coverage comes into play if you are involved in an accident with a certain type of motorist - namely, uninsured, underinsured, and unidentified motorists. Thus, this type of mandatory coverage protects drivers against hit-and-runs and accidents, as well as at-fault drivers who are illegally driving without insurance or those who do not have enough coverage.
With DCPD coverage, you can file a claim with your own insurance company after getting into an accident that damages your car. In turn, you will receive a payout to help pay for the cost of repairing your vehicle. Filing with your own auto insurance company instead of dealing with the other driver's insurance helps speed up the claims process.
Collision coverage will help you if you get into an accident that results in significant damage to your car. It can be claimed whether the damage to your car was caused by colliding with another vehicle, an animal, or an object on the road, such as a median or lamppost. Collision coverage helps out whether you are found to be liable for the accident or not.
Comprehensive coverage will pay for the cost of repairing or replacing your car if it is damaged while parked. Specifically, this type of coverage may protect your vehicle against damage caused by theft, vandalism, fire, explosions and riots, falling and flying objects, and weather-related events.
One more type of optional car insurance coverage popular among drivers in Georgetown is accident forgiveness. Accident forgiveness is additional coverage that can be added to your car insurance policy as an endorsement to protect your driving record and to help prevent your insurance premium from increasing if you have an at-fault accident claim.
The reality is that cars depreciate every year. This makes your car less valuable after a few years than it was when you originally bought it. The problem is that if your vehicle is totalled and your insurer has to issue you a payout, it will be far less because it accounts for this depreciation.
Thankfully, if you add a waiver of depreciation or replacement car insurance to your policy, this will not be the case. Instead, your payout will be closer to the equal value of your car.
With loss of use coverage, your insurer will reimburse you for the cost of taking alternate modes of transit while your car is being repaired. For example, if your car is damaged in a collision and will be in the shop for a week, you may need to rent a car or take taxis during this time. Loss of use coverage will compensate you, up to your coverage limit, for the cost of transportation you incur during this period.

Many Georgetown drivers are on a budget. Even if you don’t have a tight budget, no one wants to pay more for car insurance than they have to. The BrokerLink team always ensures that our customers receive competitive policy rates. We also provide our customers with all kinds of tips and advice on how to get cheaper car insurance, such as:
Bundling your car insurance with your home insurance policy (or tenant insurance) is a great way to save money on Georgetown auto insurance. Many car insurance companies offer bundles that allow customers to combine different types of policies, like home and auto policies, into one. From there, you can receive a significant discount on each policy.
Insurers like to see clean driving records, as this makes a driver look less risky. As a result, they might lower your rates if you drive safely. If you can maintain a clean record for several years, you could eventually qualify for a safe driver discount. Learn more safe driving tips by contacting BrokerLink.
Adding an anti-theft device to your vehicle is another way to qualify for a car insurance discount and find a cheaper policy. Insurers believe that anti-theft devices make your car less likely to be the victim of theft. For taking this extra precaution, they may issue you a discount.

One easy way to lower your car insurance costs in North York is by choosing a higher deductible. Basically, the higher your deductible, the lower your premiums. Even bumping it up by $500 or $1,000 can make a difference. If you start with a lower deductible, you can always increase it later or when your policy renews to save on future rates.
Insurance companies use various formulas to calculate the cost of car insurance rates for drivers in Ontario. However, the factors they calculate can vary, as well as how each insurance provider weighs these factors. Here's how a few of the most common factors can impact your car insurance rates:
Insurance companies use your home (and sometimes work) address to determine where your car will be most often parked and what roads it will spend the most time on. This helps them determine your risk level for collisions and incidents such as vehicle theft or vandalism.
In 2024, HRPS recorded more than 10,000 collisions across the region, a modest increase from the previous year. While it doesn't break it down by municipality, if we look at the HRSP crime map, we can see that from July 15th, 2024, to December 31, 2024, Georgetown had only 84 reported collisions, with just over 60% of them reported as hit-and-runs.
But while Georgetown doesn’t see the same heavy traffic as Mississauga or Toronto, certain busier areas, like Highway 7/Guelph Street and Mountainview Road, are more prone to accidents. In fact, according to the crime map, the majority of the collisions occurred along these two roads. On top of that, many Georgetown drivers spend a fair amount of time on congested regional roads, especially during commuting hours. More time on the road means more opportunities for collisions, which insurance companies factor into premiums.
Further, between July 15, 2024 and June 30, 2025, Halton Region reported 1,173 vehicle thefts. However, Georgetown was the second-lowest municipality on that list, with only 62 reported thefts. Still, according to the crime map, the neighbourhood with the highest number of car thefts was Georgetown South (Mountain View). Which means those living in that neighbourhood may see higher insurance rates (due to the increased risk of vehicle theft) than in other neighbourhoods, like Delrex or Marywood Meadows.
A spotless driving history can go a long way toward keeping your insurance costs low, but having driving convictions on your record, like street racing or driving impaired, can increase your rates for years.
In Georgetown, like elsewhere in Halton Region, local police have been working to reduce impaired and distracted driving. In fact, according to Halton Regional Police Service's (HRPS) Annual Report 2024 (which unfortunately does not break down numbers by municipality), the region, which includes Georgetown, saw a 16.3% decrease in impaired driving in 2024.
Your car’s make, model, and year have a big impact on your premiums. Vehicles that are expensive to repair or more attractive to thieves generally cost more to insure. For example, if you drive a vehicle that frequently appears on Équité Association’s list of the most stolen vehicles in Ontario, like the Lexus RX or the Dodge Ram 1500, your premiums are likely to be higher to reflect that extra risk.
Just like everywhere else in Ontario, drivers in Georgetown are required to carry at least $200,000 in third-party liability coverage. Many choose to increase this limit to $1 or $2 million for added peace of mind, especially considering the rising cost of repairs. However, increasing your limits will also likely increase your premiums.
More drivers are also opting for additional collision and comprehensive coverage, which protects against damage from at-fault accidents, weather events, vandalism, and theft. This is likely due to the rising costs of vehicle parts, repairs and maintenance, which have gone up by 22.3% between December 2019 and December 2024, according to Statistics Canada. These rising costs directly affect how much insurers have to pay out, and ultimately, that means higher premiums for drivers, too.
There are also many other factors that can impact your rates. For example, car insurance can also be affected by your age, gender, and even your credit score.

Not necessarily. If your used car is cheaper than the average car or your last car, then your rates may go down. Although other factors come into play, more affordable cars generally result in lower rates than expensive cars.
However, more expensive cars may have additional safety features that cheap or used cars lack, which could also reduce their premiums. If you plan on buying a used car, be sure to test drive your used car first and have it inspected by a professional. You can check out this vehicle inspection checklist for more information.
Nowadays, most insurance brokers and insurance agents offer free car insurance quotes to customers. You can likely obtain a free quote online, over the phone, or in person. All you have to do is ask and then answer a few questions about your driving history and the type of policy you are looking for.
There are a number of ways that customers can save money on Georgetown car insurance. Namely, they can try bundling multiple insurance products into one, picking higher car insurance deductibles, paying for their policy annually instead of monthly, installing winter tires on their car, equipping their car with an anti-theft device, driving a hybrid or electric car, or by completing a driver’s education program.
Your premium will likely be affected unless you have accident forgiveness coverage. With accident forgiveness coverage, your insurer is not allowed to raise your rates after your first at-fault accident so long as the necessary conditions are met. However, if you do not have this type of coverage in your Georgetown policy, then you should expect your insurance premium to go up the next time that your policy is renewed. In Ontario, at-fault accidents stay on driving records for up to six years, which means that you may face a higher premium for up to six years. The good news is that if you get into an accident that you did not cause, your rates may not be affected at all.
Yes. A driver’s licence is mandatory if you want to purchase a car insurance plan or if you want to register your car with the transportation authority in your province.
