High Prairie

High Prairie is a small town in Northern Alberta, just west of Lesser Slave Lake. We have a population of about 2,500, but our town always seems to grow in the warmer summer months, as tourists come for some of the best fishing in Canada! Winagami Lake Provincial Park is another great reason to visit. It's a place to bird watch, go for a canoe ride, or just swim and relax on the sandy beach. It's a favourite for locals and tourists alike.

High Prairie Fun Facts:

  • Muskatayosipi is Cree for Prairie River. The Beaver Nation were the first people to inhabit this land.
  • High Prairie reached town status in 1950. Before that, we were technically a village.
  • High Prairie was once a part of the staging route to the Klondike Gold Rush.
  • Every August, High Prairie hosts the Elks Pro Rodeo. It is one of the biggest bashes of the year! We have pony chariots, rodeo events, chuckwagon races and a midway.
