There are many RV and motorhome parks surrounding the beautiful city of Calgary, from scenic spots near Bragg Creek and Cochrane to long-stay campgrounds just outside city limits. It’s easy to see why Calgary is such a draw for Recreational Vehicle (RV) and motorhome owners who want quick access to some of the best RV parks in Canada.
Yet the city also sits in the middle of Hailstorm Alley, one of Canada’s most hail-prone regions, where severe storms have caused billions of dollars in insured damage over the years. Add in Calgary’s changing weather, heavy traffic, and mix of urban and mountain travel, and having the right insurance policy becomes essential to protect your home on wheels wherever your Alberta journeys take you.
At BrokerLink, we understand the needs of motorhome owners in Calgary because we live and work here, too. From weekends in Kananaskis to summer road trips through Banff, our Calgary insurance brokers can help you find RV insurance that fits how and where you travel. Connect with a local BrokerLink advisor today to build RV coverage that keeps your motorhome protected every kilometre of the way.
BrokerLink compares rates from a wide range of providers, ensuring you get the best deals available.
Calgary RV insurance protects class A, B, or C motorhomes and campervans from the everyday risks that come with owning and driving a recreational vehicle in Calgary. Because motorhomes and campervans are motorized vehicles, unlike a travel trailer, they’re required to carry Alberta’s mandatory auto insurance coverage, which includes third-party liability, accident benefits, and direct compensation-property damage (DCPD) coverage.
On top of that, a tailored RV insurance policy can include coverage for things like:
Collision damage
Fire and weather damage
Personal belongings
Vandalism and theft
Loss of use
Emergency vacation expenses

Calgary sits at the center of Hailstorm Alley, one of the most hail-prone regions in North America. Severe weather regularly causes millions of dollars in property damage, including to RVs and motorhomes. Over the past five years, hailstorms have caused more than $6 billion in insured losses across the city and surrounding areas. With unpredictable conditions like this, having a reliable motorhome policy is essential to protect one of your biggest travel investments.
It’s also more than just meeting Alberta’s legal requirement for auto insurance. Calgary’s mix of city driving, mountain highways, and surrounding rural roads means your motorhome faces a variety of risks every time you travel. Collisions, theft, vandalism, and unexpected breakdowns can quickly turn your trip into an expensive setback. Without proper insurance, you could be left covering large repair bills, liability claims, or even the loss of your motorhome entirely.
Plus, RV insurance protects more than your motorhome or campervan. It can also help cover your personal belongings and emergency expenses, so even when the unexpected happens, your travel plans and peace of mind stay intact.
Owning a motorhome gives you the freedom to explore Alberta’s lakes, foothills, and mountain highways on your own schedule. But it also means taking responsibility for a vehicle that’s both your mode of transportation and your home away from home. Along with mandatory coverage, there are several additional coverage options to help you build a more comprehensive recreational vehicle insurance policy. Here’s how they can help protect your RV:
Third-party liability coverage
Accident benefits coverage
Direct compensation-property damage (DCPD) coverage
Collision coverage
Comprehensive coverage
Personal property coverage
Accident forgiveness coverage
Roadside assistance
Emergency vacation expenses coverage
Guaranteed replacement cost coverage
Liability coverage is required for every motorized vehicle in Alberta. It protects you financially if you cause injury or property damage to someone else while operating your motorhome. Given the size and value of most RVs, it’s often wise to increase your limit beyond the provincial minimum of $200,000, with many owners choosing $1 million or $2 million for greater peace of mind.
This coverage helps you and your passengers recover after an accident, regardless of who was at fault. It typically includes medical care, rehabilitation, income replacement, and funeral expenses if needed. Accident benefits coverage is there to help make sure you’re supported financially and medically after a collision.
If another driver causes a collision in Alberta, DCPD coverage allows you to work directly with your own insurance provider for repairs instead of waiting on the at-fault driver’s provider. It simplifies the claims process and ensures you get back on the road faster.
Collision coverage pays for damage to your motorhome if you hit another vehicle or object, or if your RV rolls over. It’s a popular optional coverage for most motorized vehicles in Alberta.
Comprehensive coverage protects against non-collision losses, such as theft, vandalism, hail, wind, water, or fire. It can be valuable protection in Calgary, where severe hail events have caused billions in insured losses in recent years.
Your RV often carries camping gear, electronics, small appliances, and other personal belongings that aren’t covered by standard car insurance. Personal property coverage, also known as contents insurance, helps protect those items against theft, fire, water, or weather damage, whether you’re on the road or parked at a site.
Accident forgiveness prevents your premium from increasing after your first at-fault collision. It can be a useful policy addition for careful drivers who want to protect their long-standing clean driving record.
Motorhomes can be difficult and costly to tow, especially if they break down far from the city. Roadside assistance can provide help for things like towing, flat tires, dead batteries, fuel delivery, or lockouts.
If a covered event leaves your RV unusable in the middle of your trip, this coverage can help with additional costs for temporary lodging, meals, or rental fees so your vacation doesn’t end abruptly.
This coverage ensures you can replace your motorhome with a new model of the same make and size after a total loss, without deductions for depreciation. Guaranteed replacement cost is ideal for newer RVs or those under finance.

Owning an RV gives you the freedom to chase mountain views and relax at quiet campgrounds, and saving on your motorhome’s insurance can help keep those trips within budget. Here are some tips from the experts at BrokerLink to help you start saving today:
Insurance companies favour long periods without claims. If you can manage minor repairs yourself and only file when it’s truly necessary, your “claims-free” record can boost your renewal rate.
Insurance companies often offer significant discounts when you insure multiple things with them. Bundling your RV with your home, auto, or other policies may reduce your total premium.
Parking your RV in secure, covered storage rather than outdoors lowers its risk of damage. So does adding features like security cameras, motion lighting, or perimeter fencing. Lower risk often leads to lower rates.
Using GPS trackers, wheel locks, hitch locks, and alarms can help deter theft. Insurance companies often give discounts for demonstrating that you’ve taken active steps to protect your vehicle.
Belonging to an RV club, travel association, or professional organization can sometimes unlock group discounts. Be sure to mention any memberships you have when getting a quote.
If you can absorb a higher out-of-pocket cost for smaller claims, choosing a higher deductible typically lowers your annual premium. Just make sure it stays reasonable in case you need to file a claim.
Reviewing your coverage annually makes sure you’re not overpaying for outdated limits or missing out on new discounts.
Paying once a year instead of monthly can help you avoid administrative fees, saving you money over time.
A Calgary broker will understand local risks and know which insurers offer better rates or discretionary discounts. This can lead to more savings than a generic insurance quote.
The cost of RV insurance in Calgary depends on more than just the size of your motorhome. It’s shaped by several factors, including where you live, how you drive, and how Alberta’s wild weather behaves each season. Insurance companies look at these details to understand your level of risk and determine your insurance premiums. Here are some of the most common factors they consider and how they affect your premiums:
Auto theft and break-ins remain a growing issue in Alberta. The Insurance Bureau of Canada reports that theft claims in Calgary rose 59% from 2021 to 2024. Since RVs can hold valuable gear and are often left unattended at storage yards or campgrounds, insurance providers will price for that risk. However, instaling things like a GPS tracker, wheel lock, or security alarm may help offset the price increase.
In 2024, Calgary recorded 2,908 injury collisions and 29 fatal crashes, according to the Calgary Police Service. Since larger vehicles like motorhomes take longer to brake and are more expensive to repair, accident frequency in your area can often influence your rate.
Class A coaches, diesel pushers, and units with slide-outs, generators, solar arrays, or custom interiors generally cost more to repair or replace than compact Class B campervans. Things like higher declared values and specialty parts will increase expected claim costs, and thus, your annual premium.
If you mostly use your motorhome for short summer trips around Alberta, your risk is different from someone driving cross-country every few months. Insurance companies consider how far and how often you drive, as well as the types of roads you use. Frequent mountain driving or long highway trips often lead to higher premiums because of increased exposure to collisions and loss.
RVs stored indoors or in locked, monitored facilities are less likely to be damaged or stolen, and insurers often reward that lower risk. Leaving your RV parked on the street or in an open lot exposes it to Calgary’s hail, wind, and theft risks, which can push your premium higher.
Choosing extended coverage like higher liability limits, comprehensive and collision, guaranteed replacement cost, or lower deductibles will typically increase your premium, but it also improves your overall protection, making sure you’re covered no matter what you may face.
Maintaining a long, clean record can help keep your premiums lower. Having multiple small claims or recent major losses will generally increase your premiums at your next renewal date.
Motorhomes, travel trailers, and park models all fall under the recreational vehicle category, but how you use and insure them is actually quite different. Insurance for your motorhome is built to protect your vehicle while you’re on the move, insurance for a travel trailer is there to protect it both on and off the road, and insurance for your park model helps protect your home away from home once it’s parked.
A motorhome (or campervan) is a self-propelled vehicle, which means it must be insured under Alberta’s auto insurance system. You’ll need at least the minimum amount of Alberta’s mandatory auto insurance, which includes third-party liability, accident benefits, and DCPD coverage.
Typically, motorhome owners purchase standalone auto coverage where they can build a policy with comprehensive protection that includes additional coverage for physical damage, theft, their personal belongings, and accessories. This kind of policy ensures your motorhome is protected whether it’s parked at home, at a campsite, or out driving along the highway.
A travel trailer is different because it doesn’t have its own motor, so it must be towed by another vehicle. Travel trailers can include tent trailers, fifth wheels, pop-up trailers, toy haulers, and park models.
Since travel trailers can’t be self-driven, they don’t fall under Alberta’s auto insurance requirements. Instead, your auto insurance liability can be extended to it while it’s being towed, but once it’s unhitched, that coverage stops. If you have a form of property insurance, such as Calgary home insurance, your belongings within the trailer may also receive limited protection through the contents coverage portion of your policy.
However, to prevent filing a claim against your auto or home insurance policy, you can also purchase separate travel trailer insurance. It helps protect you, the trailer itself, the belongings inside, and any attached accessories against theft, collision, fire, water, or weather damage, whether or not it’s being towed.
While still technically a travel trailer, a park model is designed to stay in one place for an extended period, often at a seasonal site or resort. Once it’s set up at a campground or resort, it’s treated more like a small cottage than a vehicle.
Park models can also have limited liability protection while being towed, and some belongings may fall under your property insurance. However, most owners insure their park models under a specialized travel trailer insurance or property insurance policy, similar to mobile home insurance or seasonal dwelling insurance. This type of policy typically covers the unit itself, detached structures such as decks or sheds, personal liability, and your belongings and accessories.

About us
Yes. To legally operate your motorhome or campervan, you must either add it to your current personal auto policy or purchase a separate car insurance policy for it.
Your personal items, such as camping gear or electronics, may be covered if you’ve added contents insurance to your RV insurance policy, but standard auto coverage does not include personal belongings. You may also have limited contents coverage through your tenant, condo, or home insurance policy.
Most Alberta RV insurers cover a wide range of motorized recreational vehicles, including Class A, B, and C motorhomes and campervans, as well as converted buses. Whether it’s a luxury diesel pusher or a compact van conversion, your broker can help find a policy tailored to your RV’s type, value, and use.
Yes, but it’s important to let your broker know if you use your motorhome throughout all seasons. Insurance companies will need to adjust your policy to reflect year-round travel.
