Saskatchewan’s open prairies, winding river valleys and picturesque highways like the Qu’Appelle Valley make riding a motorcycle a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The motorcycle community in Saskatchewan may be small, at just 7,031 registered bikes as of 2022. But for many riders, motorcycles aren’t just a mode of transportation; they’re a lifestyle. That said, as many riders know, owning a motorcycle comes with risks. From sudden prairie storms and wildlife collisions to theft and injuries, being on a motorbike exposes you to risks.
That’s where motorcycle insurance in Saskatchewan comes in. Protect your interests and finances on and off the road. Contact BrokerLink for a free quote today.
BrokerLink compares rates from a wide range of providers, ensuring you get the best deals available.
Motorcycle insurance is a type of financial protection that covers you, your bike, and others in the event of an accident, theft, or damage. You can think of it like a contractual agreement you make with your insurance company. In exchange for a monthly fee, or premium, they agree to provide you with financial protection if something goes wrong.
In Saskatchewan, motorcycle insurance works a little differently than in other Canadian provinces. What’s different is that all riders must legally carry basic plate insurance through Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI). This coverage is automatically included once you register your bike in the province.
Basic SGI insurance provides riders with three main protections:
Third-party liability insurance: protects you in the event you cause an injury or property damage to others while driving.
Personal injury coverage: Pays for medical expenses, income replacement, and rehabilitation if you, your passengers, or pedestrians are injured in a collision.
All perils (limited): Provides some financial assistance if your bike is damaged in a collision, as a result of theft, or vandalism.
While plate insurance offers a basic safety net, most motorcycle owners find that this may not be enough. For example, if you have a customized Harley or sports bike that’s stolen, SGI basic coverage won’t cover the loss entirely. Similarly, basic plate liability coverage is only $200,000, which likely won’t cover all expenses that may arise following a serious accident you’re at-fault for.
Whether you’re buying your first motorcycle or you’ve been riding for years, owning a bike in Saskatchewan comes with real perks—but also real risks. Beyond the legal requirement to carry valid insurance, the right coverage helps protect you from the kinds of costs that can hit hard after a sudden incident.
Wildlife collisions are common, and SGI reported 16,457 wildlife collision claims from 2016–2020, totaling over $83 million in payouts. Prairie weather can shift fast, and optional comprehensive coverage can help cover hail and storm damage that basic SGI plate insurance may not. Motorcycles are also easier targets for theft or vandalism, so comprehensive and accessory coverage can protect your investment. Even minor crashes can lead to major medical bills, making personal injury coverage and higher liability limits important. And with long Saskatchewan winters, lay-up coverage keeps your bike protected in storage until riding season returns.
In Saskatchewan, all motorists, whether in a traditional vehicle or on a motorcycle, must purchase insurance through SGI plate insurance. Beyond that, you do have the option of purchasing separate coverage, should you wish. Within SGI basic plate insurance, you’ll find the following policies:
Third-party liability insurance
Personal injury coverage
All perils insurance
Comprehensive insurance
Collision coverage
Higher liability limits
Accessory/customization coverage
Roadside assistance
Loss of use
Lay-up/storage insurance
Agreed value (for vintage or collector bikes)
Accident forgiveness
Third-party liability insurance protects motorcycle owners in the event they cause bodily injuries or property damage to others while riding their motorcycle. For example, if you’re riding through Qu’Appelle Valley Cruise along the Saskatchewan countryside and get into an accident that injures another motorist, the driver can sue you for damage, which is where this policy comes in. Should a lawsuit be filed against you, third-party insurance will cover the cost of repairs, replacements, legal fees, medical bills, and settlement funds up to your policy limits. Through basic plate insurance, all motorists receive $200,000 in coverage, though many opt for higher limits for additional protection.
Personal injury coverage, also known as accident benefits, protects you, your passengers, and pedestrians if they are injured in an accident, regardless of who’s at fault. For example, if you and a group of bikers are cruising through Moose Mountain Provincial Park and you get into an accident that causes motorcycle injuries to you and your passenger, this policy will cover the cost of medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and lost income during your recovery period.
All perils insurance providers offer riders with some damage coverage. For example, if your motorcycle is damaged due to a collision, theft, vandalism, or theft, this coverage will cover the cost of repairs or replacements of your bike. Note that this coverage is limited to basic plate insurance and comes with a deductible of $700. Most motorcycle owners will opt for private insurance for higher coverage limits and a lower deductible.
All-perils insurance does an okay job at covering some motorcycle damage, but it’s often not enough. With comprehensive insurance, you extend that protection to future non-collision damages, including not only theft, vandalism, and fire damage, but also water damage, falling/flying objects, and other severe weather conditions. Prairie weather conditions can flip in an instant, which is why you may want to consider adding this to your plan, especially if you park your bike in the street or in your driveway during the riding season.
Collision coverage will cover the cost of vehicle repairs or replacements if you get into an at-fault accident on your bike. For example, if you rear-end another vehicle after an afternoon drive along the Saskatchewan River Valley that damages your bike, this policy will pay for the cost of repairs required to fix it, up to your policy limits and once you’ve paid your deductible.
Claim costs are rising across the country due to an increase in labour and part expenses, lawyer fees, severe weather events, and auto-theft crime. Because of this, your basic $200,000 in liability limits may not be enough to financially protect you should a lawsuit be filed against you. That’s why most motorcycle riders opt for higher liability coverage of up to $1 million or $2 million to ensure they’re financially safeguarded.
Accessory and customization coverage is another policy you may want to consider purchasing for your bike. Whether you’ve invested in a leather saddleback, a custom paint job, or a new exhaust system, standard insurance coverage won’t be enough to ensure your modifications are fully compensated in the event of a loss. Without accessory and customization coverage, you could be left paying out of your own pocket, which is why this coverage is necessary if you’ve invested money into making your bike your own.
Whether you’re navigating the winding roads through Prince Alberta or Cypress Hills, imagine something happening to the bike that leaves you stranded on the side of the road. With roadside assistance coverage, you can get assistance quickly and have it covered by your insurance provider, whether it’s a fuel top-up new tire, or a tow truck, so you never have to worry about whether you can make it home or not.
In the event your bike is damaged in a collision or non-collision event, loss of use coverage will pay for the cost of alternative transportation while your bike is undergoing repairs. From a rental vehicle to public transportation and ride services, you can still get to where you need to go with this insurance policy under your belt.
Lay-up/storage insurance is an endorsement that can be added to your insurance policy that will protect your bike while it is in storage during the winter from theft, vandalism, and other damages. That way, you can keep your bike safe and have it ready to go come springtime.
If you own a vintage or collector bike, you may want to consider agreed value coverage. This optional policy allows you and your insurance company to agree upon a value that your unique motorcycle is worth. So, if a loss occurs, your insurance provider will compensate you for the agreed value of your bike, rather than the actual cash value, which takes into consideration depreciation, which means more money in your pocket following a total loss.
One final type of optional car insurance coverage popular among Winnipeg bikers is accident forgiveness. Accident forgiveness is additional coverage that can be added to your car insurance policy as an endorsement, to protect your driving record and to help prevent your insurance premium from increasing if you have an at-fault accident claim.
Note: Coverage varies by province.

Motorcycle insurance is mandatory for all riders, regardless of their riding style or bike model. That being said, while insurance is a necessary expense, it doesn’t mean you can’t save a bit of money where you can, without compromising your level of protection. To keep more money in your pocket the next time you’re up for a renewal, here’s what you need to do:
Do you drive a vehicle during the off-season? Or have home insurance on your property? If so, you can benefit from bundling your plans with the same provider to save up to 15% on each policy.
Installing anti-theft devices like a GPS tracker or alarm system on your bike can help reduce your risk of theft, which in turn will lower your risk profile. As a result, you can qualify for a discount of up to 5% on your premiums.
Never been in an accident before? You may qualify for the safe driver discount! The longer you go without an accident, traffic violations, or convictions, the more you’ll save on your coverage!
Most insurance providers offer discounts to riders for the successful completion of a motorcycle safety course offered through the Saskatchewan Safety Council.
A deductible is the amount you owe to your insurance company before your coverage kicks in to cover remaining costs following a collision or other loss. By increasing your deductible, you’re agreeing to pay more out of pocket should you need to file a claim, which can lower your insurance rates.
Insurance companies often add a surcharge to accounts that pay monthly, as it costs them money to process each payment. To avoid this surcharge, consider paying for your insurance upfront.
Insurance brokers work independently from companies, allowing them to shop around on your behalf, compare rates, unlock discounts, and customize your coverage. The best part of all? Brokers are paid by insurance companies, which means you can access their services for free at any time!
Maybe your riding style changes, or you purchase a new bike for yourself during the off-season. If your insurance needs change, you’ll want your coverage to reflect these changes. Always review your coverage before renewing to avoid paying for insurance you no longer need and coverage gaps.
As of 2022, the average cost of motorcycle coverage in Saskatchewan was $812 annually. That said, insurance providers premium costs may vary.
Cruisers, touring bikes, and vintage motorcycles are generally cheaper to insure compared to high-performance sports bikes, which are considered higher risk due to their speed and accident rates, which can raise your premiums. Engine size also matters. For example, a 1200cc bike typically costs more to insure than a smaller 500cc bike, given the risk of accidents.
Where you live in Saskatchewan also plays a role in insurance rates. For example, riders in larger cities like Saskatoon or Regina may face higher premiums due to greater traffic density, theft rates, collision risks, and claim rates compared to those living in smaller towns. At the same time, if you travel on rural roads, your chances of encountering wildlife are higher than those of someone living in a more urban area.
Motorcycle riders with numerous traffic offences, accidents, and convictions are a danger to other motorists, which will result in higher premiums compared to someone with a clean driving record.
The more claims you have on your file, the more likely you are to be labelled a high-risk driver, which will increase your rates. On the other hand, no claims on your history can result in lower rates.
While SGI insurance rates are fairly standardized, if you choose to purchase additional coverage and higher premiums, you will need to pay more for the additional protection. That said, most motorcycle owners view additional coverage as worth the added expenses.
The more experience you have riding motorcycles, the less likely you are to engage in risky behaviour or get in an accident, provided that your previous driving record is clean. As a result, you’ll likely be deemed a lower risk, which may result in lower rates compared to a new rider with accidents on their record.
A deductible is the amount you agree to pay to your insurance provider when filing a claim before your coverage kicks in to cover any remaining costs. By increasing your deductible, you can lower your premium slightly, as you’re agreeing to take on more of a financial burden. In contrast, by lowering your deductible, your rates will increase.
Nothing beats driving down an empty highway in Saskatchewan in the summertime on your motorcycle. To ensure you’re protected on your journey, having the right motorcycle insurance is a must.

About us
Yes, motorcycle insurance is mandatory in Saskatchewan, similar to how car insurance is. Operating a motorcycle without valid insurance coverage results in fines, driver’s license suspensions, the impoundment of your bike, and other serious consequences.
Standard motorcycle insurance does not offer coverage for aftermarket parts or customizations. However, you can add accessory/customization endorsements to your plan for an additional cost.
If your motorcycle is stolen and you have comprehensive coverage added to your standard plan, your insurance provider will cover the cost of replacing your bike if it is not recovered. If you have not added this optional policy to your plan, you will be responsible for replacing your bike on your own.
Yes, seasonal motorcycle insurance is available in the form of lay-up coverage. This type of motorcycle insurance policy allows you to insure your bike in the summer at a reduced rate.
Yes, younger riders do face higher premiums than those who have been riding for years. Because they are more likely to be involved in collisions and engage in risk behaviours, those under 25 tend to be labelled high-risk by insurance companies until they can prove that they are responsible over time.
