Motorhomes in Saskatchewan are registered and insured through Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), which means your licence plate gives you mandatory liability, personal injury, and physical damage coverage. However, SGI’s basic insurance may not be enough to cover every risk you face. With harsh winters, prairie storms, and remote travel across Saskatchewan, many Recreational Vehicle (RV) owners prefer to have extra coverage to avoid those unforeseen costs. And that’s where BrokerLink can help.
Because SGI handles the base vehicle registration, our brokers can layer coverage options on top that cover personal belongings, higher liability limits, lower deductibles, roadside assistance, and more. These additional protections are often called add-ons and can be tailored to your specific needs. Your insurance company works with you to provide coverage that addresses the potential risks unique to RV ownership in Saskatchewan. Speak with one of BrokerLink’s Saskatchewan insurance brokers today to explore your motorhome insurance options here in Saskatchewan. You may be able to bundle your RV insurance with your home insurance or car insurance policy for additional savings if you already have coverage with the same insurer.
BrokerLink compares rates from a wide range of providers, ensuring you get the best deals available.
RV insurance in Saskatchewan is different from many other provinces because it starts with your vehicle registration through SGI. That registration includes basic coverage, which protects you if your motorhome causes injury or damage to others or if your vehicle is damaged. However, it may not be enough, and that’s where extended coverage comes in.
By adding an SGI Canada Auto Pak or a private policy through a broker like BrokerLink, you can protect your class A, B, or C motorhome or campervan from the unexpected. Extended motorhome coverage can include collision and comprehensive coverage, replacement cost protection, contents insurance, roadside assistance, and more. It can even help cover emergency travel expenses if your motorhome becomes unusable on your road trip.
Saskatchewan’s long, open highways and changing weather can make owning a motorhome both rewarding and unpredictable. Summer storms can bring hail or high winds strong enough to damage roofs and siding, while wildlife crossings and gravel roads add to the daily risks of travel. RV owners in Saskatchewan face potential risks such as severe weather, theft, and hazards associated with remote travel, making it crucial to have comprehensive insurance coverage. According to SGI, the province sees thousands of property damage collisions every year, and motorhomes can be costly to repair when accidents happen far from home.
But even when your RV is parked, the risks don’t stop. Theft, vandalism, or storm damage can strike at campsites or storage yards, often leaving owners with significant financial losses. It’s important to keep your RV insured year-round, even during the off-season, to protect against theft and damage. And some RV parks and campgrounds may even ask for proof of insurance before they’ll let you stay. Having a strong RV insurance policy helps make sure those setbacks don’t derail your travel plans or drain your savings. Many owners purchase private extension policies to fill gaps in the basic plate insurance provided by SGI. A local BrokerLink broker can help you build a tailored RV policy that’s designed to protect you and your home on wheels from whatever you face on or off the road.
Every motorhome in Saskatchewan must be registered with SGI, which provides basic protection through the province’s public insurance program. That registration gives you the mandatory coverage you need to drive legally, while optional extensions help you further protect your RV, belongings, and travel plans from the unexpected. You can also add liability coverage as an optional upgrade to protect against property damage or injury caused by your RV or trailer.

Every registered motorhome in Saskatchewan comes with $200,000 in third-party liability coverage through SGI. This protects you if your motorhome causes bodily injury or property damage to another person.
SGI’s No-Fault Injury Coverage, similar to accident benefits, provides medical benefits, rehabilitation, and income replacement if you’re injured in a collision. It also helps with funeral expenses and long-term care if needed. This coverage applies regardless of who caused the accident.
Your SGI plate also includes Basic Auto Damage Insurance, which covers your motorhome up to its actual cash value (minus a deductible) if it’s damaged in an at-fault collision. This ensures your recreational vehicle can be repaired or replaced, even when you’re responsible for the accident.
While the $200,000 minimum liability limit is mandatory, it may not be enough after a major accident. With extended coverage, you can increase your liability limit to $1 million, $2 million, or even $5 million. This helps protect you financially if someone is seriously injured or sues for damages.
Most vehicles registered with basic plate insurance come with a $700 car insurance deductible. With extended coverage, you can choose a lower deductible to reduce what you pay out of pocket when filing a claim.
You can upgrade SGI’s standard No-Fault Injury Coverage for higher income replacement and additional benefits. This helps if you rely on your income or travel frequently and want extra financial protection in case of an accident.
Motorhomes often carry thousands of dollars in personal belongings, from electronics to outdoor gear. Contents insurance, or personal belongings coverage, helps protect those items from insured perils like theft, fire, or weather damage.
Many RV owners add their own personal touches to make their motorhome feel more like home, but added accessories typically aren’t included as part of your declared value. Accessories coverage helps protect those extras, such as awnings, satellite dishes, solar panels, or even built-in outdoor kitchens, against damage or loss caused by insured events.
Motorhomes are large, heavy vehicles that can be difficult to tow or repair on the roadside. Roadside assistance is there to help you cover the costs of vehicle towing, flat-tire service, fuel delivery, and other emergency services.
This coverage helps with unexpected expenses if your RV becomes unlivable during a trip. It can help cover hotel stays, meals, and transportation, as well as non-refundable insured travel expenses.
If your RV is written off after a total loss, guaranteed replacement cost coverage pays to replace it with a new model of similar size and value. Unlike SGI’s actual cash value coverage, it doesn’t deduct for depreciation.

Protecting your RV doesn’t have to mean paying top dollar. By adjusting your coverage, reviewing it regularly, and taking advantage of discounts, you can stay insured for less while keeping your motorhome road-ready all year long. Check out our expert tips below:
One of the easiest ways to save is by bundling. When you combine your RV insurance with your home, condo, or auto policy under one provider, you can often receive a noticeable discount. Insurance companies tend to reward customers who keep multiple policies with them because it helps to simplify administration and build loyalty. For you, that means less paperwork and more savings each year.
Saskatchewan’s weather can be unpredictable, and RV thefts can happen quickly. If you park your RV in a locked garage, fenced storage yard, or secured lot during the off-season, your insurance provider may offer you a lower rate. Some companies may even give additional discounts if you use an indoor storage facility that has cameras or 24-hour security.
Limiting small claims or handling minor repairs on your own can help you keep your claims-free discount. Over time, this approach shows insurers that you’re a lower-risk customer, which helps keep your premiums more affordable year after year.
Saskatchewan has a strong RV and camping community, with local clubs and associations that promote safe travel and outdoor fun. Membership in a recognized RV group may qualify you for exclusive insurance discounts or preferred rates. So, if you’re part of a camping or RV group, don’t forget to mention it to your BrokerLink broker.
Many Saskatchewan RV owners only use their recreational vehicles for part of the year. If you park your motorhome during the winter, ask your broker if you qualify for any seasonal rating or storage discounts that may help reduce premiums during the off-season while keeping your RV protected against things like fire, theft, vandalism, or weather damage. You may automatically receive this coverage in an RV policy, similar to a motorcycle policy.
Leaving your deductible at a $700 standard can help you keep your insurance costs balanced. But if you’ve previously lowered it, and you’re now comfortable covering a bit more out of pocket in the event of a claim, consider increasing it back up to a higher option to help lower your premium.
Paying your premium all at once can help save you from paying monthly service fees.
A local BrokerLink advisor understands the realities of Saskatchewan travel, from hailstorms near Regina to wildlife crossings on rural highways. They can help you find the right balance between affordability and protection for your RV insurance policy.
Every registered RV in Saskatchewan comes with basic protection through SGI, but many drivers add an Auto Pak through a broker for broader insurance coverage. Consider reviewing the options with your BrokerLink broker to make sure you’re not paying for coverage you don’t need.
When you hear “RV insurance,” you might imagine that coverage comes as one pre-determined amount. But in reality, it’s a lot like car insurance, focusing on the finer details, like which RV you own, how often you use it, where it lives, and your driving and claims history. Here are some of the main factors that make a difference in what you’ll pay for RV insurance in Saskatchewan:
SGI uses the Canadian Loss Experience Automobile Rating (CLEAR) system to help it determine auto premiums, but since CLEAR doesn’t include recreational vehicles, Saskatchewan insurers look at your RV’s declared value instead. This is the amount you and your insurer agree your RV is worth.
If your RV has a higher declared value, it means a higher potential payout in the event of a loss. To protect that value, you will likely need higher coverage limits, which in turn leads to a higher insurance premium.
Even though SGI’s basic plate insurance is the same across the province, your location within Saskatchewan and where you tend to travel may still matter to private insurers. If you spend more time on gravel roads, in rural areas, or in places with higher crime rates or wildlife collisions, your premiums may reflect that added risk.
How and where you store your RV when it is not in use can often make a noticeable difference in your rate. If you keep it in a locked garage or secured storage lot, your insurance provider may put you into a lower risk category. On the other hand, parking it on the street or in an unsupervised open field increases its exposure to things like theft, vandalism, and weather damage, putting you into a higher risk category.
SGI’s Safe Driver Recognition (SDR) Program rewards drivers who stay collision- and conviction-free. Everyone starts in the neutral zone, and for each year you go without a claim or traffic ticket, you earn a 2% discount on your basic premium, up to a maximum of 25%. Drivers who stay collision- and conviction-free may also earn lower rates and discounts on their extended coverage, as well.
When you register your RV, it comes with basic plate insurance through SGI. But for many Saskatchewan drivers, basic insurance isn’t enough, and they choose to add extended coverage, like higher liability limits, personal belongings coverage, or emergency vacation expenses, through a broker like BrokerLink. And while each added layer of protection increases your premium, it also limits how much you would have to pay out of pocket if something goes wrong.
With SGI’s basic plate insurance, the standard deductible for most vehicles is usually around $700. But with extended coverage, you can choose to lower your deductible to $500, $350, $200, $100, or even $50 to make out-of-pocket costs more manageable if you need to file a claim. However, a lower deductible typically increases your overall premium. Some private insurers may also allow you to increase your deductible past $700 to help lower your premiums even more.
Even with the best protection, there are still a few situations where your RV insurance coverage may not apply. Certain situations and certain conditions, such as exclusions or limitations in your policy, may affect whether your claim is covered. That’s why we feel that knowing what’s not covered may help you plan ahead and avoid disappointment later. Here in Saskatchewan, SGI and private insurance companies tend to share similar rules when it comes to excluded claims, including:
It’s extremely rare for a policy to cover the costs of everyday upkeep. That means damage caused by rust, corrosion, mould, or mechanical failure generally isn’t covered. This is because regular maintenance, like oil changes or roof resealing, is considered a standard part of owning an RV, not an insurable loss.
Insurance is there for accidents, not deliberate acts. If damage happens because of reckless behaviour, impaired driving, or intentional actions, your claim could be denied. If you plan to rent out your RV, you must disclose this to your insurance provider and add the appropriate endorsement. The same applies if your RV is used for business or rented out without proper commercial coverage.
Certain risks, such as flooding, sewer backups, earthquakes, or rodent damage, are often excluded unless you specifically add additional coverage for them to your policy. For example, if mice chew through your wiring while your RV is in storage, your provider may consider it a “preventable loss” and deny the claim.
If rodent damage is something you worry about, talk to your local BrokerLink broker about adding specific coverage for it. They can help you find the right protection for how and where you store your RV.
If you travel outside Canada without notifying your insurance provider or broker, your policy may not apply if something were to happen. Outside of Canada, insurers may not be able to inspect damages or verify repairs, or even guarantee legal defence costs under local law. As a result, any collision, damage, theft, or liability claim could be denied or deemed invalid because the policy simply doesn’t extend that far.
That’s why it’s important to notify your broker before travelling outside Canada. In many cases, your broker can arrange temporary international coverage or help you purchase a special travel endorsement from a partner insurer that offers protection outside your regular coverage area.

About us
Yes. Every motorhome must be registered with SGI to operate on public roads, which includes basic liability, injury, and auto damage coverage.
Not under SGI’s basic coverage. While your RV itself is protected, personal belongings like laptops, tools, and camping gear are not. But you can add coverage for your personal belongings through your extended coverage to help protect them against theft, fire, water, or storm damage.
You can insure most self-propelled RVs, including Class A, B, and C motorhomes, campervans, and converted buses.
No, but you may save money if your RV is in storage. Many insurance providers offer seasonal or lay-up pricing, which reduces your premium while your vehicle is parked and not in use.
