Hull

Aircraft Hull Insurance covers physical damage to the aircraft. The insurance for the hull includes such parts as avionics, seats, radio equipment, and GPS. Your broker will help you determine the best coverage for your situation.

Liability

Private aircraft owners and commercial aircraft operators need to be protected by Liability Coverage in the event of an accident. Loss of cargo, injury to passengers, and destruction of property are all items considered under the scope of liability insurance.

Where does my plane insurance cover me if I leave Canada?

The distance by which aircraft insurance follows a plane will vary between providers. When you work with The Standard Insurance, we will inquire about regular or planned flight routes to ensure we have you covered in all locations you wish to travel. Generally, most basic private aircraft insurance policies will cover you in North America, including:

Canada
Continental United States of America (excluding Alaska, Hawaii)
Republic of Mexico
Bahama Islands
French Islands of St Pierre and Miquelon (off the coast of Newfoundland)

Some companies may include other countries in their basic coverage. Otherwise, you will need to add extended coverage to protect yourself over inter-continental flights.

If my plane damages a hangar I don’t own, or other planes in a hangar I rent, does my Liability Coverage protect me?

This depends on the nature of the damage, but generally, yes. Liability insurance is there to protect you from financial onus if the property or other planes are damaged by your own. There are exclusions on every insurance policy that can be reviewed with your broker.

Do I need insurance for each plane?

Yes, each aircraft should be insured.

If I damage the property of a third party while operating my aircraft, am I covered?

This depends on the type of damage. If your plane crashes and damages third-party property, you would be covered through your liability insurance. If you are aerial spraying and damage the crops, this could be covered under Chemical Drift or Misapplication if you are found negligent.

Does my coverage extend to the personal property onboard my plane?

Most Aviation Insurance policies will provide some coverage for personal property. This may include items such as baggage and headset & handheld avionics. This should be discussed with your insurance advisor.

Are all pilots covered?

Most policies list the approved pilots, and coverage only applies if one of them is in command of the aircraft. Please discuss this with your insurance expert as there are some exceptions to this rule.

Does Hull Insurance cover my GPS?

Yes, Hull Insurance will provide coverage on the entire aircraft including all attached equipment.
