What are you looking for?
Riding a motorcycle throughout Manitoba can feel like freedom on two wheels. One day you’re cruising along the Trans-Canada, the next you’re winding through quiet prairie backroads, with the sky stretching endlessly above you. But as every rider knows, the open road also comes with its share of surprises. From deer darting across rural highways to sudden shifts in weather, it only takes a moment for a ride to change course.
BrokerLink compares rates from a wide range of providers, ensuring you get the best deals available.
Owning a motorcycle means more than just enjoying the ride. It also means carrying the right insurance before you get to turn the key. Every rider needs Basic Autopac through Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), though it looks a little different for motorcycles. Basic Autopac covers injuries to yourself, damage you might cause to others, and protection for your bike if it's damaged in a collision or tips over.
That’s the starting point, and it applies no matter what kind of motorcycle you own. A sport bike, a touring model, or a cruiser all fall under the same requirement. From there, riders often choose to expand their protection with motorcycle extension coverage, which offers higher liability limits, lower deductibles, comprehensive coverage, extended loss of use, new vehicle protection coverage, and more. Reach out to BrokerLink today to learn more about how optional coverages can help protect your motorcycle even more.
We all understand how riding a motorcycle can give you a stronger sense of freedom, but it also carries greater risks than driving a car. Without airbags, a body shell, or crumple zones, you’re more exposed in every crash. Even minor collisions can and often result in a disproportionate amount of serious injuries for riders than for drivers.
Motorcycles are also more sensitive to their environment. Wet pavement, loose gravel, uneven surfaces, or unexpected frost can quickly cause a loss of traction. And their smaller size makes them easier for other drivers to overlook when turning or changing lanes.
Imagine you’re heading down the Perimeter Highway on a summer evening when a car changes lanes without seeing you. You manage to brake in time, but your bike tips over and skids across the pavement. You end up with scratched bodywork, damaged gear, and injuries that could keep you off work for weeks. Without the right insurance, you’d be left to cover the repairs, medical bills, and lost income all on your own.
That’s why insurance is about more than just meeting the legal requirement of Basic Autopac. It’s there to protect your finances, your health, and the investment you’ve made in your bike. A serious crash can bring costs that far exceed the minimum coverage. By working with a Manitoba BrokerLink broker, you can adjust your policy so that it fits the way you ride and has the protection you actually need.
If you want to ride in Manitoba, your motorcycle insurance will start with Basic Autopac. This is the foundation every rider needs before hitting the road. But just like no two riders are the same, insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all either. That's why, with motorcycle extension insurance, there are several coverage options to help you customize your protection depending on how, when, and where you ride. Let's take a closer look at how mandatory and optional coverages work for riders in Manitoba:
Third-party liability coverage
Personal injury coverage
All perils coverage (collision & upset only)
Comprehensive coverage
Increased liability limits
Lower deductible options
Excess value coverage
Loss of use - motorcycle
New vehicle protection
Leased vehicle protection
Rental vehicle insurance
Basic Autopac comes with $500,000 in liability. This is what protects you financially if you’re responsible for injuring someone else or damaging their property in a crash. Picture accidentally clipping a vehicle while lane changing or causing an accident that injures another driver. Liability coverage steps in to handle the costs, like legal fees and medical bills, that could otherwise be overwhelming.
Riding is exhilarating, but it’s also higher risk than driving a car. If you’re injured, this part of your policy helps with medical care, rehabilitation, and even income replacement if you can’t work. It’s there so you can focus on healing instead of worrying about how to pay your bills.
While Basic Autopac still provides up to $70,000 in protection, the all-perils coverage for motorcycles is more limited than it is for cars. For vehicles, all perils are a combination of both collision and comprehensive, but for motorcycles, it only applies to collisions and upsets (i.e., situations like crashing, tipping over, or losing control). If you want protection against theft, fire, or weather damage, you’ll need to add optional coverage.
Comprehensive is one of the most popular add-ons for motorcycles because it expands your protection to things outside of crashes, such as theft, fire, vandalism, and weather damage. In Manitoba, motorcycles aren’t eligible for lay-up coverage, which lets car owners pause certain protections during off-season storage. That makes comprehensive especially valuable because it keeps your bike protected year-round, even while it's off the road. You can choose between a $500 or $200 deductible.
The basic liability limits in Autopac are just a starting point, and many riders decide to increase them. Medical claims and lawsuits can get expensive very quickly, especially if a crash causes serious injuries. While the default coverage begins at $500,000, you have the option to extend it all the way up to $5 million.
Basic Autopac comes with a standard $750 deductible that can feel steep if you ever have to make a claim. With this option, you can lower your deductible to $500, $300, or even $200, so that if something happens, you’re not facing as big an out-of-pocket cost before insurance helps cover the rest.
A lot of motorcycles are more than just a factory-standard machine. Maybe you’ve added custom parts, upgraded the exhaust, or installed new accessories. If your bike’s value is higher than the $70,000 that Basic Autopac accounts for, excess value coverage helps ensure those upgrades are protected.
If your motorcycle is essential to your business or daily life, what happens if your bike is in the shop after a collision? With Basic Autopac, you get some protection against loss of use if your bike is stolen or damaged in an accident where you're not at fault. But you must choose the least expensive, most reasonable transportation option. However, you can extend your loss of use coverage to cover up to $135 a day with a maximum of $3,564, even when you're at fault for the collision.
If you’ve just invested in a brand-new motorcycle, this option can save you from financial heartache. Instead of getting a depreciated payout if your bike is written off, new vehicle protection may provide a replacement bike or the original purchase price. It’s a way to keep that big investment protected in those early years.
Leasing a motorcycle can make it easier to get on the road, but it also changes who technically owns the bike. If the motorcycle is written off, the insurance payout usually goes straight to them, which leaves your own investment, like a down payment or trade-in credit, unprotected. Leased vehicle protection helps by reimbursing you for that amount, so you don’t lose the money you put in.
If you ever need to rent a motorcycle, moped, or other vehicle, having rental vehicle insurance through MPI can help you save up to $25 a day compared to purchasing insurance directly from the rental company. It gives you up to $5 million in liability protection if someone makes a claim against you, plus up to $100,000 in coverage for damage to vehicles rented outside Manitoba, with only a $200 deductible.

An MPI application from August 2025 points to a 6.82% increase for motorcycles in 2026. After balancing, including a proposed move to a $1,000 standard deductible, the increase comes down slightly to 5.81%, on top of an overall 2.07% increase. With higher costs on the horizon, finding ways to reduce your premiums matters more than ever.
The good news is that MPI and local brokers like BrokerLink offer a variety of discounts and programs to help keep coverage affordable without giving up the protection you need. Here are some of the best ways for riders to save:
MPI’s Driver Safety Rating rewards careful riding with lower premiums. Each year you avoid speeding fines or at-fault collisions, you move up the scale and see more savings on your insurance.
Sport models or motorcycles with higher repair costs can mean higher premiums. Choosing a bike that has a lower risk of theft or a higher safety rating can help keep your insurance costs more manageable from the start.
A motorcycle or moped classified in the pleasure category can only be ridden to or from work or school no more than four days in a month, and its annual travel is capped at 1,609 kilometres. Since you're spending significantly less time on the road, which lowers your risk, you may be rewarded with a low-mileage discount.
A broker can often help you find and unlock even more discounts you may qualify for.
Keeping your motorcycle in a locked garage or secured storage space may help reduce your risk rating and lower your comprehensive costs.
A higher deductible typically means a lower premium. So, if you’re confident you could afford the out-of-pocket cost in case of a claim, raising your lowered deductible back up to the standard amount can help lower your rate.
Think about how you use your bike today compared to last year. A quick policy review with your autopac agent or broker can make sure your coverage and cost still match your routine.
Monthly payments typically come with administrative service fees and interest. So, if you can pay your insurance in one yearly sum, you'll be able to avoid those extra costs.
Every rider wants to know what really drives the price of motorcycle insurance. In Manitoba, your premium is determined by a combination of personal habits, the type of bike you ride, and the choices you make about your coverage. Here’s a closer look at some important factors:
Your history on the road says a lot about the kind of rider you are. If you’ve kept your record clean of traffic convictions and at-fault crashes, MPI will reward that through its Driver Safety Rating. The higher your score, the higher the discount you receive (up to 48%), and the less you’ll pay for insurance. On the other hand, every at-fault collision or ticket pushes your rating down, chipping away at any savings you'd earned. Once your score falls below +1, the discounts disappear altogether.
Not all motorcycles are treated the same when it comes to insurance. A high-powered sport bike that’s expensive to repair will often carry a higher rate than a cruiser built for long and steady rides. Customizations and aftermarket parts may also add to the equation. If your motorcycle has a lot of chrome, upgraded exhausts, or high-end accessories, you may want optional coverage that reflects that higher value, and your premiums will adjust accordingly.
Where you ride matters just as much as what you ride. City traffic in Winnipeg, with its stop-and-go rhythm and heavier congestion, carries different risks than a quiet stretch of prairie highway, and your insurance rates will reflect those differences.
Heavily populated areas like Winnipeg and Brandon carry a higher risk of overall collisions, while rural roads bring a greater chance of colliding with wildlife and slower emergency response times. These are likely why MPI’s latest report shows that urban locations account for 85% of all traffic victims, yet nearly 60% of road fatalities happen on rural roads.
Some riders only take the bike out for weekend trips, while others use it as their main mode of transportation. The more time you spend on the road, the greater your risk exposure is, and the higher your insurance can run. Mileage, commuting habits, and even whether you store your bike indoors or outdoors are all details that insurance companies may consider when setting your premium.
Every policy starts with Basic Autopac, but that’s just the baseline. Riders often choose to add optional protection, like comprehensive coverage for theft, fire, or weather damage, or higher liability limits in case of a serious crash. The more coverage you add, the higher your premium will be, but it also means you’ll have stronger protection when you need it most.
Think of your deductible as your share of the repair bill before your insurance coverage kicks in. For all perils and optional comprehensive, the standard deductible is set at $750. However, riders can ask their autopac agent or broker to bring it down to $500, $300, or even $200. A smaller deductible means you’ll pay less out of pocket if you ever need to file a claim, but your monthly premium will likely go up to balance it.
No. In Manitoba, motorcycles don’t qualify for lay-up coverage the way cars do. Instead, thanks to intervention from the Coalition of Manitoba Motorcycle Groups (CMMG), MPI sets motorcycle premiums on a seasonal basis. This means that your motorcycle remains insured all year long, but the cost is calculated over the main riding months from May 1 to September 30. The nice part is that you don’t have to start paying until the season begins, which gives you a little extra breathing room through the winter.
This seasonal approach was designed with actual riders in mind. Most Manitoba riders put their bikes away once the snow falls, so it wouldn't make sense to pay the same way as year-round drivers. By tying premiums to the months you’re actually on the road, it helps make insurance more practical and affordable, while still keeping your bike protected while it's parked.
It's a pretty well-known fact that riders face higher risks than most other drivers. Between 2022 and 2024, motorcycle collisions in Manitoba led to:
But this trend isn't just unique to Manitoba. Nationally, even though they make up only about 2% of road users, motorcyclists represent close to:
As for how safe it is, in 2022, Manitoba had just over 27,200 motorcycle registrations and seven rider fatalities. Across Canada, there were 251 motorcycle fatalities in total that year, meaning only about 2.7% of those happened in Manitoba. Here's how Manitoba compares with the two provinces that had the most motorcycle and moped registrations that year:
Looking at the numbers side by side, riders in Ontario actually faced about 50% higher odds of being involved in a fatal crash than riders here in Manitoba, though riders in Quebec faced slightly lower odds than we did.
MPI has identified the top two leading factors behind motorcycle crashes in Manitoba as:
And while insurance doesn’t change these risks, it can certainly help soften the impact. Having the right coverage means that if the unexpected happens, you’re not facing the financial and personal fallout alone.
Riding in Manitoba isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. From navigating Winnipeg’s busy Perimeter Highway to taking weekend trips along Highway 75 or exploring the smaller towns spread across the prairie, every road has its own challenges. That’s why it helps to work with people who know them firsthand.
