Dauphin may be modest in size, but it’s full of life as the heart of Manitoba’s Parkland region, home to nearly 8,400 people, according to the latest census data from Statistics Canada. On any given day, you will find drivers making their way through town, heading out along rural highways toward Duck Mountain or Riding Mountain parks, or simply enjoying the open Prairie roads. With thousands of drivers travelling in and around the community, it's essential for each and every one of them to have the right car insurance coverage.
Manitoba’s roads come with their own personality, shaped by shifting seasons, unpredictable weather, and the unique pace of rural travel. BrokerLink’s licensed insurance brokers understand these rhythms and can help you find coverage that feels tailored to your life here in Dauphin.
BrokerLink compares rates from a wide range of providers, ensuring you get the best deals available.
In Manitoba, all drivers are required to have Basic Autopac coverage through Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI). This mandatory coverage includes essentials like protection for injuries, property damage, and certain collision costs. It’s the core of every car insurance policy in the province.
Where brokers like BrokerLink come in is helping you go beyond the basics. While MPI takes care of your mandatory coverage, we can arrange optional protection tailored to your needs. That might mean higher liability limits, coverage for loss of use, lower deductibles, or protection for things MPI’s basic plan does not cover.
In Manitoba, you must have valid car insurance to drive legally. If you’re caught driving without insurance, the Highway Traffic Act allows fines of up to $2,000 for a first offence. On top of that, the court may suspend your licence for up to one year, and your vehicle could be impounded.
But in Dauphin, car insurance is about more than just avoiding penalties. Local drivers know just how fast the weather can turn or how often deer appear near Highway 5. Winters bring icy roads, summer brings heavy traffic with visitors heading to festivals and nearby parks, and any season can throw in a surprise or two.
That is why having coverage tailored to your life behind the wheel matters. The right policy will protect you financially and give you peace of mind, no matter what the road brings.
In Manitoba, every driver must carry at least Basic Autopac from MPI. This covers third-party liability, personal injury benefits, and all-perils coverage for your vehicle. But Autopac is just the starting point. Many Dauphin drivers choose to add optional types of coverage through a brokerage like BrokerLink for extra protection and peace of mind.
Here’s what’s included in the mandatory coverage every Dauphin driver needs, along with some popular optional add-ons that can give you and your vehicle a little extra protection.
Third-party liability coverage
Personal injury coverage
All perils coverage
Increased liability limits
Excess value coverage
Loss of use coverage
New vehicle protection
Leased vehicle protection
Rental vehicle insurance
Lay-up coverage
If you’re found at fault for injuring someone or damaging their property in a collision, third-party liability coverage helps cover the costs. This can include medical expenses and repair costs, as well as your legal defence fees. In Dauphin, Basic Autopac includes a $500,000 coverage limit.
If you’re hurt in a collision, Manitoba’s Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP) helps cover things like medical costs, rehabilitation, and even income replacement if you cannot work while you recover. It applies no matter who is at fault, so you can focus on getting better without worrying about the bills. Think of it as MPI's version of accident benefits coverage.
Autopac combines collision coverage, comprehensive coverage, and uninsured motorist coverage into its all-perils coverage, which can help protect your vehicle from a wide range of risks, whether the damage comes from a collision or something unexpected like theft, fire, or vandalism. Under Basic Autopac, your vehicle is insured for these events up to the policy’s limits, with a standard $750 deductible.
Basic third-party liability covers up to $500,000, but many drivers choose to raise this to $1 million, $2 million, or even $5 million. It’s an affordable way to add extra protection, especially if you plan to drive outside Manitoba, where accident-related costs can be much higher.
If your vehicle is worth more than $70,000, Basic Autopac will not cover its full value in the event of a total loss. Adding excess value coverage ensures you’re properly reimbursed for the full worth of your car if something happens.
We know how tricky getting around after an accident can be. While Basic Autopac includes some loss of use protection, you can upgrade your loss of use coverage to help you rent a vehicle comparable to your own while yours is being repaired or replaced.
A brand-new car starts losing value the moment you drive it off the lot. This coverage helps protect that investment by ensuring that if your vehicle is written off within the first two years, you’re paid its original purchase price instead of the depreciated amount. The insured value factors are your vehicle’s purchase price, any accessories you added, the pre-delivery inspection, and sales tax, plus an allowance for inflation.
Leased vehicle protection works similarly, but not the same as the one for new vehicles. Because the dealership or leasing company is the legal owner, any insurance payout for a total loss goes directly to them instead. This optional protection covers your down payment and any trade-in value you put toward the lease.
Whether you’re renting a car for a trip or borrowing a friend’s truck, this coverage travels with you anywhere in Canada or the United States. It provides up to $5 million in protection if someone makes a claim against you, plus up to $100,000 for damage to vehicles rented outside Manitoba. With rental vehicle insurance through MPI, you may also save up to $25 a day compared to buying coverage directly from the rental company.
If you plan to park your vehicle for a long stretch (e.g., storing it for the winter or leaving it behind while you travel), switching to Lay-Up coverage could help lower your costs. This protection keeps your vehicle insured against accidental loss or damage, including fire, theft, vandalism, hail, and lightning, while excluding road use.

Car insurance in Manitoba is still among the most affordable in Canada, but that does not mean rates are staying still. According to the Insurance Institute of Canada, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) directed MPI to raise Basic Autopac rates by 5.7% starting April 1, 2025, which works out to about $50 more a year for the average passenger vehicle. On top of that, the Canadian Underwriter reports that MPI has also asked for a further 2.07% increase for 2026.
These increases are driven by higher repair costs, more severe collisions, and pricier vehicle technology. And in a rural community like Dauphin, keeping your premiums in check can make a real difference.
MPI uses the Driver Safety Rating system to reward safe drivers and hold higher-risk drivers accountable. By driving safely, you can earn up to 48% off vehicle insurance premiums (and up to $30 off your driver’s licence charge).
MPI uses the Canadian Loss Experience Automobile Rating (CLEAR) system to group vehicles based on claim frequency and repair costs. Higher-rated groups generally mean higher premiums. Picking a vehicle with a better CLEAR rating can help keep your insurance more affordable.
If you’re comfortable taking on more of the cost in the event of a claim, raising your deductible back up to $750 (if you've previously lowered it) can help lower your monthly or annual premium.
While you'll have to pay more up front, paying your policy in one lump sum can help you avoid the extra administrative fees that often come with each monthly payment.
Take the time to review your policy every year before your renewal date to make sure you’re not paying for coverage you no longer need.
Brokers who live and work in the area will understand the driving conditions and risks unique to Dauphin. They can help you find the right balance of cost and coverage while tailoring your policy to your unique needs.
Getting to the bottom of car insurance costs can feel as winding as Dauphin’s rural roads. Insurers look at several key factors to work out your premium. Even though MPI sets the base coverage for everyone through Basic Autopac, the actual amount you pay depends on a mix of personal details, local driving risks, and the coverage you choose.
As we mentioned earlier, MPI’s Driver Safety Rating (DSR) program rewards drivers with clean driving records by lowering their premiums. On the other hand, if your record includes traffic convictions like speeding, distracted, or impaired driving, or if you have been at fault in collisions, those incidents will stay on your record for several years, lowering your DSR level and discount. In fact, according to MPI, distracted driving is now the number one cause of road fatalities in Manitoba.
The CLEAR system collects nationwide data on how often different vehicles are involved in collisions and how costly those claims are to settle. Based on these patterns, each vehicle is assigned to a rating group. MPI uses these rating groups to help them determine premiums. Generally, the higher the group, the more you can expect to pay for insurance. As such, vehicles with higher repair costs, expensive parts, or a history of theft tend to cost more to insure.
Dauphin falls under MPI’s Territory 2, which generally has different rates than high-density areas like Winnipeg. While less traffic may work in your favour, rural factors such as wildlife collisions, longer commutes, and the possibility of slower emergency response times are likely part of Territory 2’s rating factors.
On top of that, in 2022, Manitoba recorded 95 fatalities from motor vehicle collisions, which was 27% higher than the five-year average. Most of these tragedies happened outside urban areas, with 59% of fatalities occurring on rural roads. Since Dauphin drivers spend a lot of time on these types of roads, this is likely a factor contributing to Territory 2’s rates.
The way you use your vehicle can affect your likelihood of making a claim. For instance, if you work from home and mainly use your car for short trips to run errands or visit friends (known as pleasure use), you generally present a lower risk than someone who spends the entire day driving as a delivery driver.
Basic Autopac includes standard liability, injury protection, and all-perils coverage. So, if you add optional protection like higher liability limits, loss of use, accident forgiveness, and excess value, it will likely raise your premium. While those choices often come with an added cost, they also add extra protection and peace of mind when things go wrong.
The set deductible under Basic Autopac for private vehicles is $750. But by working with a BrokerLink broker, we can help you decide if decreasing your deductible to lower your premiums makes sense to help you reduce your out-of-pocket expenses should you need to make a claim. Just keep in mind that a lower deductible generally means higher premiums.

Winter in the Parkland has a way of changing its mood in an instant. One moment, the sky is a bright winter blue, and the next, you're driving through a wall of blowing snow on stretches of PTH 5.
Before you head out, you should always take a few minutes to check the latest weather conditions and be prepared to adjust your plans. The Government of Manitoba recommends reviewing weather and highway reports, keeping a winter emergency kit in your vehicle, and pulling over somewhere safe or turning back if the weather takes a turn. Plus, don't forget that Manitoba 511 is a valuable tool for real-time road updates. MPI offers these tips for anyone driving in the Parkland during the winter:
Reduce speed
Leave more space
Brake sooner
Avoid cruise control
Know how to recover from a skid
One of the best winter driving tips for Dauphin and the rest of the Parkland Region is to keep a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle at all times. The last thing you want is to be stranded on a rural back road in the middle of a blizzard with no supplies while you wait for help. Your kit should include:
Shovel
Booster cables
Traction aids
Reflective triangles or flares
Flashlight
Charging cable and/or portable charger
Warm clothing
Blankets
Bottled water
Energy bars or other non-perishables

About us
All Manitoba drivers must have at least Basic Autopac through Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), which includes third-party liability, personal injury protection, and all-perils coverage. You can also buy optional coverage for added protection. You can purchase these through any Autopac agent.
MPI offers low-interest financing for approved winter tires, and some private insurers give up to a 5% premium discount if you use them between November and April.
Basic Autopac covers mandatory liability, injury, and all-perils. A comprehensive car insurance policy would combine basic protection with optional add-ons to offer you broader protection against a wider range of risks.
A clean record moves you up the Driver Safety Rating scale, helping you earn more discounts as you go. You can earn up to a 48% premium discount. However, collisions or traffic convictions can lower your rating and increase your premium. Drivers considered the highest risk can face a driver’s licence charge of up to $3,010 and receive no discounts on their vehicle insurance.
Some of the more popular options include higher liability limits, lower deductibles, loss of use, accident forgiveness, excess value coverage for high-value vehicles, and new and leased vehicle protection.
The best and easiest way to find the best rate on car insurance in Dauphin is to work with a local broker who can gather and compare quotes from multiple providers on your behalf and look for hidden discounts you may qualify for.
Unless your current provider also offers coverage in Manitoba, you will need to find a new insurance provider once you move to Dauphin. You must register your vehicle in Manitoba within three months of moving, and you will need to switch to MPI’s Basic Autopac insurance to drive it.
