There’s nothing quite like skipping across Saskatchewan’s lakes in summer, but before you tie up at the dock, it pays to think about protection. Saskatchewan is home to nearly 100,000 bodies of water, and if your boat has a motor of 10 horsepower (7.5 kilowatt) or more, you’re required to carry a Pleasure Craft Licence under Transport Canada rules. But that licence only acts as identification, which means it doesn’t provide financial protection.
While boat insurance is not legally mandatory in Saskatchewan, accidents on the water, sudden storms, theft, or damage to others can lead to high costs if you’re not insured. With Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), you can add your watercraft to your Home/Mobile Home Pak Policy, but that coverage only extends to physical damage and theft. For full protection, including liability and on-water risks, you’ll need a dedicated policy from a private insurer.
That’s where BrokerLink comes in. Our licensed brokers throughout Saskatchewan will work with you to build a tailored policy that protects you and your vessel. Explore BrokerLink’s boat and watercraft insurance options below.
BrokerLink compares rates from a wide range of providers, ensuring you get the best deals available.
Owning a boat in Saskatchewan often brings to mind long summer days on the water, whether that means fishing at sunrise, tubing with family, or cruising across a calm lake with friends. But what many people don’t think about is what happens when plans go sideways. That’s where having boat and watercraft insurance makes a difference.
Boat insurance helps protect you financially when the unexpected happens. It can pay for repairs if your boat is damaged in a collision, help replace it if it’s stolen, and provide coverage if you accidentally injure someone or cause damage to another person’s property. Depending on your insurance policy, it may also extend to protect your accessories like motors, trailers, or safety equipment, offer a replacement if it’s in the shop after an insured peril, or cover medical bills for personal injuries.
While boat insurance isn’t mandatory in Saskatchewan, having insurance can still be essential. Rough water, hidden debris, or crowded boat launches can quickly lead to accidents or damage. A sudden storm, a mishap at the dock, or even theft from your own driveway can leave you with bills that drain your savings.
Boats and trailers are also attractive targets for thieves because they are easy to move, and Saskatchewan has seen high-profile thefts in recent summers, including a Malibu Wake-Setter stolen from Moonlight Bay in 2025.
Boat insurance can also cover more than just your vessel. It may include liability if you injure or damage another person’s property, protection for motors and trailers, medical bills if you suffer a personal injury, and even loss of use if repairs keep you off the water. With Saskatchewan’s unpredictable weather and higher risk of theft, the right boat insurance coverage can offer you peace of mind. You can focus on enjoying the water, knowing your boat and your finances are protected.
Boat insurance is about more than protecting the vessel itself. The right insurance policy combines several coverages so that you’re protected from different risks on the water, at the dock, in storage, or even in your driveway. Here are some of the main coverage options that give Saskatchewan boaters peace of mind every time they head out on the water:
Third-party liability coverage
Personal injury coverage
Collision coverage
Comprehensive coverage
Accessories coverage
Replacement cost coverage
Loss of use coverage
Pollution and wreck removal coverage
On-water assistance coverage
Trailer insurance
Third-party liability coverage protects you if you accidentally cause bodily injury or property damage to a third party while operating your boat. Medical bills, legal fees, and repair costs can escalate quickly, and without liability coverage, you could be responsible for all of it. You may also be able to choose higher limits, which gives you broader protection if a serious incident occurs.
Personal injury coverage helps when you or your passengers are injured in a boating accident. It can cover medical bills, rehabilitation, and even lost wages if you can’t work during your recovery. This protection, also known as accident benefits, is there to help fill any gaps that Saskatchewan Health may not cover.
Collision coverage pays for physical damage to your own boat if it collides with another vessel or solid object. Whether it happens on the water or during a boat launch, repairs after a collision can be expensive. With this coverage, you’re not left handling those repair costs alone.
Comprehensive coverage protects against non-collision risks like theft, fire, vandalism, weather, or wild animal damage. Many Saskatchewan boaters store their vessels outdoors or in seasonal sheds, making them vulnerable year-round. This coverage offers peace of mind when your boat is out of the water.
Accessories coverage applies to upgrades or equipment that was not included with the boat originally. Depth finders, trolling motors, sound systems, or custom seating can all be expensive items to replace. With this coverage, you’re not left paying out of pocket if they are stolen or damaged.
Replacement cost coverage ensures that if your boat is a total loss within a set timeframe, you still receive enough to replace it with a brand-new equivalent. It protects you from depreciation and means you’re not forced to settle for less.
Loss of use coverage helps cover costs if your boat is out of service after an insured event. It may include rental expenses or alternate arrangements so your plans aren’t ruined while repairs are underway. For Saskatchewan boaters with a short summer season, this coverage could be especially valuable.
This coverage helps if your boat leaks fuel or oil into the water or if it sinks and needs to be removed. Environmental cleanup can be expensive, and local authorities may hold you responsible for the costs. Wreck removal adds another layer of protection by covering expenses to recover or dispose of a sunken vessel.
On-water assistance coverage is like roadside assistance, but for the lake. If your boat breaks down, runs out of fuel, or needs a tow back to shore, this coverage, which is sometimes known as marine assistance coverage, helps cover the cost. It can be a lifesaver when you’re far from the launch and need help quickly.
Trailer insurance covers the utility trailer you use to transport your boat. It provides protection against theft, vandalism, or collision damage, whether parked or on the road. Since trailers are just as essential as the boat itself, this coverage can be an important addition to your policy.

Owning a boat is one of the best ways to enjoy Saskatchewan’s short but beautiful summers, and saving a bit on your insurance may help you enjoy it even more. The good news is that insurers often reward smart choices, safe habits, and a little extra planning with lower rates. Here are a few simple ways to help lower your premiums without giving up your peace of mind:
If you already have your home or auto insurance with the same company, ask your broker about bundling. Bundling with your other policies often earns you a significant discount. It also helps to simplify your coverage by keeping everything under one policy and one renewal date.
In Canada, anyone operating a motorized pleasure craft must complete a Transport Canada–approved boating safety course and pass the test to earn a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). For those who only use non-powered boats, the card isn’t required, but taking the course may still be worthwhile. It builds confidence on the water, improves safety awareness, and may even help lower your insurance costs
Storing your boat or personal watercraft in a locked garage, shed, or other secure location lowers the risk of theft and weather damage. This lowered risk may lead to lower insurance rates or discounts.
Staying claim-free for several seasons shows that you take care of your boat and operate it safely. Insurers may offer you lower rates as a reward. After a certain amount of time, you may even qualify for a claims-free discount.
If you’re comfortable covering a larger portion of smaller repairs yourself, consider choosing a higher deductible. This tells your insurer that you’re willing to share more of the financial risk, which often leads to lower premiums. Just make sure the deductible you choose is still within your budget if something unexpected happens.
Paying once a year instead of monthly can save you from additional administrative or financing fees. If your budget allows, paying annually is a small change that may add up to noticeable savings over time.
It’s tempting to go for every option available, but not every insurance policy add-on fits every boater. Review your coverage each boating season to make sure it still matches how and where you use your boat. Removing extras you no longer need, or adjusting limits that are too high for your situation, may help you reduce your premium.
High-performance vessels, personal watercraft, and large motors all tend to raise premiums, while slower or smaller boats are often more affordable to insure. If you’re shopping for a new vessel, factoring in insurance costs before you buy can help you make a choice that fits both your lifestyle and your budget.
Boat insurance premiums can actually vary quite a bit depending on how much risk you present to the insurance company. Because Saskatchewan has thousands of lakes and rivers, everything from your horsepower to how you store your boat can make a difference.
Insurance companies consider a wide variety of factors to help them determine your overall risk level. This then helps them set your rates. Here are some of the factors they may consider when you apply for coverage:
Insurers want to know what type of small vessel you have, as different watercraft have different levels of risk. A small aluminum fishing boat used for quiet mornings on Echo Lake, for example, is very different from a ski boat built for speed or a sailboat with a large mast and rigging. The more powerful or specialized the vessel, the higher the chance of costly repairs. And higher repair risks generally mean higher premiums.
A new, high-end boat typically costs more to insure than an older one because the replacement value is likely higher. But older boats can still have their own risks, like aging electrical systems or worn motors, which are also factored into your risk level.
A high-horsepower motor can turn a calm lake into a collision risk if something goes wrong. Higher horsepower engines mean greater speed and greater potential for more severe accidents. Saskatchewan averages about 27 drowning deaths each year, and more than three-quarters happen in lakes/ponds and rivers. In Saskatchewan, where many lakes and rivers are used for fishing and leisurely cruising, lower-horsepower boats often see lower premiums.
In Canada, anyone operating a motorized pleasure craft must hold a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), which you earn by passing a Transport Canada–approved boating safety test. Beyond that, additional training and years of safe boating experience can help show insurers that you’re a responsible operator. Nationally, Canada sees about 111 recreational boating deaths each year, and nearly nine in ten involve the unsafe practice of not wearing a lifejacket. If you’ve been boating for years without any incidents, insurers may reward all that experience and safe boating behind you with lower rates.
How and where you use your boat matters just as much as what kind it is. A boat that spends most of its time on calm lakes for family outings is generally less risky than one that’s used to reach remote cabins or hunting spots, or to cross long stretches of fast-flowing rivers. In 2022, Saskatchewan recorded 35 water-related fatalities, the highest in recent years, showing how varied and unpredictable local waterways can be. The more adventurous or remote your trips, the more likely your insurer will adjust your rate to reflect that risk.
Insurance providers also care about where your boat parks when you’re not using it. A vessel stored in a locked garage or shed is better protected from theft or storm damage than one left uncovered outdoors. And boats moored at marinas or in slips may face higher risks of theft or vandalism, and even damage from weather or floating ice. As such, Saskatchewan boaters who trailer their boats home after each trip may see better rates than those who leave them moored all season. However, if you store your boat on a trailer in an open driveway, the increased risk of theft can still raise your premium.
Look, we all know that the more protection you add, the higher your premium will be. Coverage for pollution cleanup, wreck removal, accessories, or guaranteed replacement value will all add to your overall cost, but they also add more comprehensive protection for when you need it most.
Depending on your policy, you may want to increase your coverage limits for more protection in a liability claim. For instance, if you have $200,000 in liability and you cause an accident that damages another boat and injures several passengers, you may quickly exceed that limit. Choosing higher coverage limits means broader protection, but it typically comes with a higher cost.
On the other hand, raising your deductible can help you lower your premium. A higher deductible means less money that the insurer has to pay out in the event of a claim, which insurers may reward with lower rates. So, if you want a higher limit but are looking to prevent your rates from rising, you may want to consider also increasing your deductible to help balance the difference.
Just like car insurance, your claims record follows you. If you’ve filed multiple claims in the past, insurance providers may see you as more likely to file another claim and decide to charge higher premiums.

About us
No, boat insurance isn’t required by law in Saskatchewan, but it’s still essential protection for any boat owner to help protect them financially from things like theft, physical damage, and liability claims.
They can be. Many boat insurance policies offer optional accessories or equipment coverage as an add-on to cover your fishing gear, depth finders, GPS units, and other equipment.
While some providers may offer seasonal coverage, most boat insurance policies run year-round but are priced for seasonal use. Insurers typically use a rating model similar to motorcycle insurance, where you pay more during peak boating months and less through the winter.
