A new year is a great time to think about your goals, pick up a hobby or learn something new. We think you’re great just the way you are, but if you want to improve yourself, we’re here for it! Keep reading for tips that can help you stick to your New Year’s resolution.
Pick something realistic
We’re not trying to crush your dreams or anything. You should shoot for the stars! But when it comes to a New Year’s resolution, pick something you can actually achieve this year. For example:
|Start and finish a bestselling novel
||Write the first three chapters
|Get a six pack
||Work out three times a week
|Read 100 books
||Read one book a month
|Become the next Jimi Hendrix
||Sign up for guitar lessons
|Floss every day
||You should already be doing this one
Write it down
Try writing your resolution down in a journal, notebook or just on a scrap piece of paper. Taking it out of your mind and putting down on paper can make it seem more real. If you’re more digital than analog, write it down on the notes app on your phone. There are also apps available that can help you stick to your goals and resolutions.
Find an accountability buddy
It can be hard to meet your goals on your own. Try to find someone who has a similar goal so you can hold each other accountable. For example, if you’re trying to get in shape, find a gym buddy or someone you can go for walks with. If you’re trying to read more, join a book club or start your own. If you’re learning a new skill, try taking a class instead of learning on your own. You’re sure to meet people with the same goals as you.
Reaching goals with a friend not only makes it easier, it also makes it more fun. If you don’t know anyone who is trying to achieve the same goal as you, look online. There are communities and support groups for everything! Check websites like Reddit, Meetup or Facebook to find like-minded people.
As you work towards your goals, celebrate milestones and reward yourself! It will make it more fun and motivate you to keep going. For example, if you finish a chapter of your book, treat yourself to a nice dinner. If you work out three times a week for a month, celebrate with a new outfit for the gym. Make sure your reward fits in with your overall goal. Here are a few different ways you can reward yourself and celebrate milestones:
- Cook yourself a delicious meal
- Have a spa day at home or at the salon
- Get dressed up and go for drinks with your friends
- Take yourself to a movie
- Blast some music and have a dance party!
Learn from your mistakes
A mistake isn’t a mistake if you learn from it! If you slip up on your resolution, don’t beat yourself up about it. Ask yourself why you made that mistake. Is your resolution too ambitious? Maybe you need to modify it so it’s easier to achieve. Maybe you need to modify your schedule so you have time to work towards your goals. Maybe you need more support from your family and friends. Take time to think, reflect and learn.
